What is TENS Therapy?
By ProMatcher Staff
What does TENS stand for?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is one possible method of treatment that your chiropractor may recommend. TENS uses low voltage electrical current to “scramble” or potentially block pain receptors in order to relieve some, if not all, of the patient’s back pain.
The electrical current is delivered through a small piece of equipment. The small TENS unit has two electrodes connected to it. During the procedure, the electrodes are attached to the affected area and the electric current can pass through the skin.
This a non-invasive procedure as no incisions need to be made. Additionally, this type of therapy is also used to treat neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches, in addition to back pain.
