What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal Decompression Therapy (Non-Surgical)

What is it?

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy stretches or decompresses the spine in order to relieve pressure on the nerves, decrease pain, and improve mobility of the affected area. This type of therapy is a pain-free, non-invasive alternative to spinal surgery. There is no recovery time and after your appointment, you can carry on with your day as planned.

Is it right for me?

Spinal decompression therapy is often used to treat neck pain, back pain, herniated or bulging disks, and injured nerve roots. It is often used in conjunction with other types of therapy, like electrical stimulation or cryotherapy. However, spinal decompression can be very expensive, and unfortunately, it does not work the same for everyone. There is some debate in the medical community about the long-term efficacy of spinal decompression.

What should I expect?

A single spinal decompression therapy session typically lasts no more than 40 minutes. The number of sessions required will vary depending on severity of the symptoms, but it is common for patients to undergo 20+ sessions of spinal decompression over a span of several weeks. During each session, the patient lays on a computer-controlled table that is operated by the chiropractor. Once the patient is secured in the harness, the table provides traction to the areas of the spine that require the most attention.
